True to its Argentinian roots, Discépolo has a very humble background. It was born out of family traditions, strong friendship and a passion for Argentina's food and culture.
In 2005 Carlos Sarmiento immigrated to Vancouver with his family. Carlos had grown-up in Buenos Aires in a working class home. Both his mother and father owned and operated a “Bodegón”, a small typical Buenos Aires restaurant with a great variety of foods.
He had seen his parents work hard, passionately giving great food and service, to help him and his siblings get the best despite the hard economical times.
Upon arrival in Vancouver, Carlos had great trouble finding employment despite his university education. He was able to find small work in restaurants, which reminded him of working at his parents' place reigniting his passion for food.
After working at several Restaurants across Canada, Carlos and two Argentine friends, embarked on a journey; their mission was to bring the best of Argentinian Culture to Vancouver. Out of this passion and desire, Discépolo was born.
Why Discépolo? Enrique Santos Discépolo was an Argentine tango and milonga musician and composer, author of famous tangos such as "Cambalache", a tango explicitly critical of 20th-century corruption. Carlos and his friends decided to name the restaurant in his honour.
Today Carlos continues to put out fantastic food. Every plate comes from generations of struggle and passion, combined with the best ingredients some of which are specially brought from Argentina.
Discépolo has evolved to promoting Argentinian music, dance and general culture. Carlos’ mission in life is to share the culture he loves so much with everyone. Please make sure you join us for the best Argentina can offer!
